Sports Pages in the Summertime!
I was
reading my Sunday sports page (yes, I still get the
real thing and not the internet version) and read a
very interesting article on a veteran, Mike
McNaughton, throwing out the first pitch at a
softball game.
Why is that interesting
and why am I writing about it?
There are several
reasons.
First, it's July and a
slow sports month and this fills up space.
Second, he is a hero and
an amputee and it gives me a chance to salute him
and his service.
Third, and this is the
real reason, it gives me a chance to point out to
y'all something about sports pages during the
summer.
Have you ever noticed that they, also, have to fill
space during this slow time of year for sports?
The way they do it is with feature stories on
individuals.
In this case it is about a war hero.
In other cases it might be about an
up-and-coming prospect for the big high school in
the area, or maybe it's about a local person who
does something behind the scenes in sports.
Anyway, just notice your sports pages during
the summer and notice how many features are in there
as opposed to sports coverage.
Another One Bites the Dust!
As most
college football fans know, from May until September
only bad things can happen to your favorite team.
This is the time where
you don't read about games or practices but about
accidents and arrests and players transferring or
being suspended.
During
this off season, LSU is no exception.
They have lost nine
players off their spring roster.
Most of the players are
players who were way down on the depth chart.
However, this week the
Tigers lost a starter in Dominique Allen, FB, who
was suspended indefinitely from the team by coach
Les Miles. The usual reason of
“breaking team rules”
was given for the dismissal.
That should leave the
Tigers a little short on depth at fullback with the
earlier loss of Thomas Parsons.
Anyway, fullback is not
a critical position.
You can always move some
big dude from the line to play fullback and block.
Just remember that during the summer, nothing good
happens to a football team, only negative.
Bobby Johnson!
Bobby Johnson, the football coach at
Vanderbilt resigned unexpectedly this week.
He said basically that he was burned out and
wanted to do something different in his life.
I can understand that he might
want to try something different in his life.
As we get older and go through life our
priorities have a tendency to change.
However, I have a problem with this guy's
timing. He says he wouldn't have his heart into the
season.
My question is, “SO?”
How many people go through their work day
with something else on their mind?
Besides, how much coaching does the head man
do anyway?
He could have told his bosses
that this would be his last season and given them a
chance to select a replacement.
Instead he put the whole program at
Vanderbilt in a lurch.
They have to scramble and find an interim
coach.
Bobby Johnson did a job as well, if not better, than
can be expected at Vanderbilt, but the way he left
left something to be desired.
Congratulations!
Congratulations to:
Drew Brees on picking up four
ESPYs the other night.
The National League on finally
winning another All-Star Game.
The Miami Heat on winning the NBA title without ever
having to play a game.
Until next time, may the good Lord bless and keep you
