Before the
season started LSU Tiger fans were predicting mostly
9-3 or 8-4. You had a good percentage that were
really negative and saying 7-5 or 6-6. And you had
a few who were saying 10-2 or 11-1. They were few
and far between, but there were a few.
As the
season played out, Tiger fans became very
pessimistic as the Tigers continued to win very
unimpressively. They won against North Carolina who
had had 13 players held out of the game by holding
the 'Heels at the six yard line to save the game.
They staggered along with unimpressive wins over
Vandy, Mississippi State, and West Virginia.
Then they
had that fiasco against Tennessee and still won the
game. However, at that time who would have called
that a win?
Going into
the Florida game, most Tiger fans said that the team
would get their come-uppance in Gainesville. Well,
it didn't happen that way. The Tigers won the same
way they had been winning earlier, in heart-stopping
fashion and with a little bit of “luck.” The Gators
have proven they are not the Gators of old, but how
often does LSU win in the Swamp?
Then there
was that loss to the best player, paid or not, in
college football.
And then how
many fans favored the Tigers against the dreaded
Tide and Big Nick? Well, as they say, the rest is
history.
This past
Saturday the Tigers took care of business and
defeated ULM 51-0. Again fans that like to complain
can even find something to complain about in a 51
point win, the offense. Yes, the offense.
I guess what
I am saying is, this has been a weird season. Most
fans look at a team's wins as you put more points on
the board than your opponent. This LSU team looks
at wins at the end of the game as your opponent
doesn't have as many points as you do. Somehow LSU
puts one or two offensive touchdowns on the board
during the game. They also put three or four field
goals on the board thanks to the defense and special
teams getting the offense good field position which
they very seldom take advantage of for touchdowns.
Then they rely on their defense and “great” play
calling to win the game or should we say “not lose
the game.”
No matter
how you slice it, this has been a season where LSU
has a chance for one of the few times in their
history to have only one loss. However, it feels as
if this team is playing for respect and a five
hundred season every week.
